With the officer shortage beginning to bite ship owners and managers are trying to recruit more cadets. One problem is a lack of available berths, with ships typically being built to only carry the minimum number of crew necessary. The cadets pictured above however are on the Chevron's brand new 105,000 dwt crude oil tanker Capricorn Voyager. Basically a yard standard vessel, built by Samsung, South Korea, the design was modified to allow the tanker to carry a training officer and 12 cadets. An additional deck was added to the accommodation block and considerable other upgrading work was required, with even heavier anchors needed as the extra deck increased the ships tonnage.
